The Colorectal Program at St.
Catherine of Siena Medical Center is designed to use the most
advanced technologies and minimally invasive procedures to
minimize hospital stays and maximize recovery times.
St. Catherine’s provides the
latest in Colorectal Surgery
Laparoscopic Surgery (Keyhole)
uses a special fiber optic camera called a laparoscope to
visualize the interior of the abdominal cavity. Instead of
one large incision used in traditional surgeries, several
tiny (5-10mm) incisions are made through which the laparoscope
and several small, specially designed surgical instruments
are inserted. The surgeon performs the surgery using images
from inside the abdomen which are projected onto a computer
screen.
Laparoscopic surgery offers more advantages when compared
to traditional surgical methods, as follows:
- Less post-surgical pain
- Less need for pain medication
- Shorter hospital stays (1 to 4 days on average)
- Quicker recovery times ( 1 to 4 weeks earlier)
- Fewer small bowel blockages
- Fewer wound infections
- Improved cosmetic results
Laparoscopic Surgery is used to treat the following:
- Anal, Colon and Rectal Cancer
- Bleeding
- Constipation
- Crohn’s Disease
- Diverticular Disease
- Inflammatory Colitis (Ulcerative Colitis)
- Ostomy (Creation of Colostomy or Ileostomy)
- Polyps of the Colon and Rectum
- Rectal Prolapse
- Rectocele
- Volvulus
Other minimally-invasive techniques are used to treat
the following:
- Anal Fissure
- Anal Warts
- Anorectal Abscess
- Bowel Incontinence
- Fecal Incontinence
- Hemorrhoids
- Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
- Peritus Ani
- Pilonidal Disease
St. Catherine’s also offers Colonoscopy:
Colonoscopy is a procedure used to view inside the colon
and rectum to detect abnormalities, like inflamed tissues
and ulcers. Colonoscopy allows physicians to identify early
signs of colorectal cancer and can help diagnose unexplained
changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the
anus, and even weight loss.
Problems with your colon, rectum, and anus can cause immense
discomfort, and discussing this problem with your doctor can
be an even more uncomfortable experience. However, as colon
cancer is among the nations leading diseases, early diagnosis
and treatment is important. The physicians at St. Catherine’s
are readily available to help you through the process, and
will do so in confidence. Your peace of mind is our first
concern.
Don’t Suffer in Silence…St. Catherine’s
can help.
