Healthy Sundays exemplifies Catholic Health Services’ mission to care for those in need and is one our most prolific outreach efforts. Started in 2005, the Healthy Sundays program provides preventive health screenings and education to members of underserved communities in Long Island.
Programs are focused on serving communities most in need by coordinating our outreach with local parishes to plan and hold events. These programs reach the uninsured and undocumented – two of the most susceptible populations and most in need of more health care resources. Our experience shows that most immigrants are members of faith-based organizations. By working with the parishes, we are able to reach a group that typically mistrusts the public health care system. Typical topics and tests include cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI and flu shots. Participants that have abnormal test results are referred to community physicians, Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Health Center (staffed by CHS), or one of our hospitals and all care is paid for by Catholic Health Services.
