St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center History
The Diocese of Rockville Centre's healthcare ministry, organized under
Catholic Health Services of Long Island, is focused on bringing health
and healing to each person that we have the privilege to serve. Since
1913, Catholic healthcare on Long Island has built a distinguished
tradition of operating community hospitals and human services known
for their compassionate, high-quality care.
On February 29, 2000, Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS)
purchased the Medical Center, then known as St. John's Episcopal
Hospital from Episcopal Health Services. The Center was renamed
St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, after Catherine Benincasa of
Siena, Italy, who lived in the middle ages and was noted for her work
as a nurse, mediator and spiritual leader.
Senior Leadership immediately formulated a strategic plan and set
about improving the Medical Center. Renovations were made to the
lobby, chapel, and patient care areas. St. Catherine's was the first
hospital in the CHS System to implement an information technology
initiative. This included the installation of new and upgraded computers
throughout the hospital and training of staff in state-of-the art computer
technology.
In our commitment to achieve healthcare excellence close to home,
St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center is continually updating and
expanding its' services to the community.
Some of the new innovations include:
CARDIAC SERVICES UNIT
The newly renovated 42 patient Cardiac Services Unit (CSU),
provides optimal comprehensive intermediate cardiac services,
utilizing a multi-disciplinary approach to care with the addition of a
Telemetry Computerized System for precise and immediate
reading and transmitting of cardiac test results. The CSU's
upgraded facilities reflect twenty-first century efficiency and
comfort.
NEO NATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT, LEVEL II
Our Special Care Nursery, equipped with advanced technology,
cares for infants with medical complications, such as premature
birth and low birth weight. Designed to provide the most
comprehensive care for the family unit, the center offers an intimate,
home-like environment for mother and child, allowing both
privacy and comfortable surroundings with uncompromised care.
STATE ACCREDITED STROKE CENTER
With the advent of state designated Stroke Centers, protocol now
requires that stroke patients be diverted past a closer community
hospital to a state designated stroke center, if the patient can
arrive at the stroke center within two hours of the onset of stroke
symptoms. Emergency Medical Service personnel will be required
to contact St. Catherine's as soon as possible to notify the
Emergency Department that they are transporting a stroke patient
to thei hospital. This will allow St. Catherine's Emergency
Department time to assemble a stroke team that will provide rapid
diagnosis and treatment for patients with stroke symptoms.
PACS
St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center recently purchased the high
technology Picture Archiving Communication System, (PACS).
The system provides precise and immediate reading and
transmitting of radiology results.
DESIGNATED REFERRAL SITE FOR MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING
Suffolk Patients requiring hospital care are referred to St. Catherine's from
Memorial Sloan Kettering, Suffolk.
EMERGENCY ANGIOPLASTY C-PORT
St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center is one of a handful
community hospitals on Long Island that has attained the approval
from the New York State Department of Health to perform
Emergency Angioplasty, a minimally invasive life saving procedure,
during a heart attack. With a staff of ten highly trained interventional
cardiologists, on call 24 hours a day, diagnosis to Emergency
Angioplasty can be done in less than 60 minutes. St. Catherine's
met rigorous standards to qualify to perform this surgery.
HOSPITALIST PROGRAM
At St. Catherine, our Hospitalist Team consists of board certified
physicians, who are on-site 24 hours a day and act on behalf of
patients who are admitted without a personal, primary care
physician. Many community-based physicians elect to assign the
care of their patients to St. Catherine's Hospitalist Team.
Hospitalists maintain regular communication with the patient's
private physician and will continue to follow and monitor the patient
upon discharge of the hospital. When these patients return home,
the responsibility for their medical care shifts back to a community-based
primary care physician.
Research indicates patient satisfaction scores are the highest in the
history of the hospital. Measured by a recent Press Ganey Report,
patient satisfaction scores reached new highs with Inpatients at
81%, Emergency Department at 84.7% and Ambulatory at 90.6%.
These initiatives represent St. Catherine's dedication and
commitment to the patients we serve.
