Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a degenerative brain disorder that afflicts more than one million people in the United States. An estimated ten thousand people suffer from this debilitating disorder on Long Island alone. The cause of this disease is unknown.
Symptoms of Early Onset:
Slight tremor, localized muscle stiffness, slowness of movement during walking or rising from a chair.
Symptoms of Advanced Disease:
Severe impairment of gait (walk), balance and ability to maintain correct body posture.
Reduction in activities of daily living and diminished quality of life.
Who can get Parkinson's disease?
Parkinson's Disease is most common among older adults, effecting 1 in every 100 people over the age of 75. At least 1 million people in the United States currently have the disease. It is estimated that world wide, by the year 2020, more than 40 million people will have this disease.
