New Technology at St. Catherine’s
The Department of Radiology Acquirers MRI

Smithtown, NY – St. Catherine of Siena
Medical Center’s Executive Director and Chief Administrative
Officer, Sharon Kennish, RN, board of trustees, administration,
leadership and staff were present as Chairman of the Board,
Deacon Thomas Reilly blessed the new Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI) technology recently installed at the hospital. The Siemens
MAGNETOM Avanto - a revolutionary new MRI scanner enables
St. Catherine’s radiologist to obtain the highest resolution,
full-body images faster, helping physicians to diagnose and
treat patients more effectively.
“The MAGNETOM Avanto symbolizes a new era of MR image
quality and efficiency that allows us to obtain high resolution,
full-body images without repositioning the patient,”
said Matthew Rifkin, M.D., Chief of Radiology.
Dr. Rifkin continued, “We can then diagnose and treat
patients in a more timely and comfortable manner. This technology
is also much quieter than conventional MR scanners and allows
feet-first examinations, greatly decreasing anxiety for patients
who are uncomfortable in small spaces.”
During welcoming remarks, Ms. Kennish said, “We are
experiencing a new and exciting time at St. Catherine’s.
We’re offering inpatients and outpatients the most current
medical technology while our mission of compassionate care
to all we serve remains constant. The new MRI is a symbol
of our commitment to provide the community with the very best
in health care.”
The MAGNETOM Avanto offers many advantages, particularly
for neurological functional applications and whole body scanning.
It also features Siemens Unique IPAP (Integrated Parallel
Acquisition Technique), which provides fast image acquisition
with parallel imaging in all three dimensions, including head
to toe, front to back and side to side. Additionally, the
system features Audio-Comfort, reducing acoustical noise by
up to 97%.
