Looking good and feeling better
at St. Catherine’s
Smithtown, New York - Cancer can rob a woman
of her energy, appetite and strength, but it does not have
to take away her self confidence. Look Good…Feel Better
is a free program that teaches beauty techniques to women
who have cancer and are in active treatment, to help them
combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.
Look Good…Feel Better group programs are offered nationwide
in comprehensive cancer centers, American Cancer Society (ACS)
offices, community settings, and now at St. Catherine of Siena
Medical Center, located in Smithtown, New York.
In
the sessions, trained volunteer cosmetologists teach women
how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics
and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry. The
free cosmetic kits provided at these group sessions are available
in light, medium, dark and extra dark shades to enhance all
complexion types. Women learn ways to disguise hair loss with
wigs, scarves, and other accessories. “It is a very
fun and positive environment, where the women benefit in so
many ways. They learn tips that they can apply daily and receive
emotional support as well,” stated American Cancer Society
Patient and Family Services Manager Mary Ellen Leahy.
St. Catherine’s held its first session on Tuesday,
January 26, 2010, and is proud to facilitate the program.
“The Look Good…Feel Better program is another
important addition to the comprehensive women’s health
services offered at St. Catherine’s. It’s a great
program where the focus is solely on the patient, offering
support beyond diagnostic treatment. They leave here feeling
good and looking great!” stated Meiling Alsen, RN, OCN,
Breast Health Educator.
The American Cancer Society’s program is staffed with
caring and compassionate volunteers that are dedicated to
helping women regain confidence. “With everything that
patients go through during treatment, this program reminds
them that they can have control over something, their self
confidence,” said American Cancer Society Volunteer
Margaret Dill. Look Good…Feel Better is a free, non-medical
product-neutral program offered in partnership with the American
Cancer Society, the National Cosmetology Association, and
the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, a charitable
organization supported by the cosmetic and personal care products
industry. For more information about the program offered at
