St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center's Barbara O’Neill, RN is Nominated for the 2006 Nurse of Excellence Award
St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center’s Barbara O’Neill, RN, Nurse
Manager, Psychiatry, has been chosen to represent St. Catherine’s
Hospital for the 2006 Nurse of Excellence Award, one of the
most prestigious nursing awards on Long Island, from the Nassau
Suffolk Council of Nurse Administration. Ms. O’Neill
received this honor in recognition of her outstanding achievements
in the Department of Psychiatry at St. Catherine’s.
She has committed her professional work to inpatient psychiatry
since 1980 and continues to dedicate her career to healthcare
excellence in psychiatry at St. Catherine’s. Ms. O’Neill
was honored at a moving ceremony at the Woodbury Country Club
on Wednesday, May 17th. She was one, among 25 nurses from
surrounding Nassau-Suffolk Hospitals nominated for this award.
Gara Edelstein, RN, Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services
& CNO of St. Catherine’s said, “Barbara exemplifies
the many qualities a nurse must possess; excellent clinical
skills, communication skills, kindness, caring and compassion.
She has made a significant contribution to the outstanding,
comprehensive, inpatient Psychiatric Program here at St. Catherine’s
and makes me proud to be a nurse!"
In the nominating entities statement, submitted by Mary Jane
Finnegan, RN, Nursing Director of the Emergency and Psychiatry
Department’s, she wrote, “ Throughout history,
the mentally ill have been a challenge for caregivers. Barbara
has dedicated her career to the care of this specialized population.
Her efforts to promote patient advocacy, kindness, acceptance
and tolerance of this patient population have influenced those
she leads and has spread throughout the hospital and community”.
Barbara’s response to the nomination was heartfelt
and touching. “I have found my work with these patients
to be warming, poignant and challenging. As a staunch patient
advocate, I have embraced the national and local incentives
to provide an environment wherein the patient is empowered
and recovery oriented…patients return to this facility
reassured as to how they will be treated”.
