St. Catherine’s Staff Run to End the Sounds of Silence
On Saturday, May 10th, St. Catherine’s Maternity Department staff joined fellow Long Islanders at Jones Beach for the Sounds of Silence 5K.
The mission of the Sounds of Silence, Friends of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York for the Awareness of Pregnancy and Postpartum Depression is an initiative to advocate for the health of women, infants, children and families everywhere by breaking the stigma and the ‘sounds of silence’ a mother may suffer from during perinatal mood disorders or postpartum depression.
Not only did St. Catherine’s staff proudly participate in the 5K, but many of the team members placed in the awareness run. Registered nurse Kristin Thayer placed second in her age group, and her daughter, an aspiring nurse, Mary Thayer, 17, placed first in her age group. And, two other registered nurses from St. Catherine placed in another age group—Liz Maffia placed first and Neila Hernandez placed third.
“We are so proud to support the Sounds of Silence—and so pleased to have placed in this important 5K here on Long Island,” said Nurse Manager Neila Hernandez, RN-C, MSN.
St. Catherine of Siena offers a free postpartum depression support group, Mothers’ Circle of Hope for mothers. Perinatal mood disorders are the number one medical complication related to childbearing. Approximately 10 percent of women may experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy and up to 20 percent within the first 12 months after having a baby.
